Chennai, December 5th 2019: A 60-year-old female cancer survivor from Baharain who had previously treated for endometrial cancer has successfully undergone breast conservation surgery at Gleneagles Global Health City, the largest facility of Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Chennai. During her recent follow up’s, Doctors at Gleneagles Global Health City detected a small hypoechoic lesion of size 1 X 0.8 cm in upper outer quadrant of her left breast during a mammogram. She did not have any symptoms and a thorough clinical examination did not reveal any breast lump or palpable axillary nodes.
The patient underwent ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy which was suggestive of Invasive lobular carcinoma. Metastatic workup did not reveal any spread of cancer elsewhere in her body. She underwent pre-operative localisation of the lesion with J WIRE under image guidance. Following which she underwent breast conservation surgery, i.e Wide Local Excision under J WIRE Guidance. The patient also underwent Sentinel Lymph Node biopsy to accurately assess the spread of a tumour to the axillary lymph node & thereby avoiding unnecessary axillary nodal dissection.
Detection of breast cancer at a very early stage not only makes it easily curable but also offers best cosmetic result, said Dr Rajasundaram, Director, Institute of Oncology, Gleneagles Global Health City. The sentinel lymph node biopsy technique significantly reduces the rate of unnecessary axillary lymphadenectomy thereby avoiding complications such as lymphedema, shoulder dysfunction, loss of sensation overarm & seroma formation said, Dr Raja Sundaram.
Full field Digital Mammogram (FFDM) is essential in the treatment of very early breast cancer, it can detect non-palpable lesions and has risk stratification of newly detected lesions based on BI-RADS criteria said, Dr Rajasundaram.
