“Save the feet and Keep Walking” campaign
The National RSSDI – Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India is the largest organisation of diabetes care professionals in Asia with 9500 members. The RSSDI Tamil chapter was formed in the year 2010 and has 1500+ members from all over Tamil Nadu.
The national RSSDI has started the “Save the feet and Keep Walking” campaign all over India.
The RSSDI Tamilnadu Chapter is proposing to screen 10,000 Patients in 1 week all over Tamil Nadu.
The foot complication in Diabetes is very costly and an all India study done recently by Prof. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre in Royapuram, Chennai showed that the expenditure for people who undergo repeated amputation in the foot is 4 times more than in people with Diabetes who do not have foot complications.
Amputations in the foot in India happen, mainly, because of loss of sensation in the feet due to uncontrolled Diabetes. During each hospitalisation for Diabetic foot complication the patient and one attender has to stay for a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks in the hospital.
The RSSDI Tamil Nadu chapter aims to screen 10,000 people with Diabetes for foot complications in 1 week all over Tamil Nadu with the help of Doctors from the RSSDI Tamil Nadu Chapter. This campaign will run from Aug 3rd to Aug 9th all over Tamil Nadu. This program was launched by Prof. V. Mohan, Patron and Past President of National RSSDI on August 2. This National program is being coordinated by Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, the current National Vice President of RSSDI and the Chairman Fleet of RSSDI Tamil Nadu Chapter.
