For 21 years, viewers have followed Buzz and his friends to infinity and beyond in Toy Story. But now, with Disney+ Hotstar’s Lightyear, the toy Buzz we know is a legendary space ranger. Disney and Pixar’s latest film boasts thrilling action, clever callbacks, and a new cast of quirky characters that blast off on an intergalactic adventure. The movie exists within the cinematic universe of the little kid Andy we saw in the Toy Story franchise. Lightyear gives an origin story to Buzz’s signature suit and even classic lines like, “There seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere.”
The square-jawed Buzz in the film is a charming watch packed with sublimity and giddy inventiveness. The voice cast, meanwhile, has done a brilliant job in capturing every character of the film. Chris Evans, who voices for Buzz, slips naturally into the role, capturing Buzz’s mannerisms and uttering many of his familiar catchphrases. Meanwhile, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne, and Peter Sohn as Buzz’s dutiful robot cat, Sox, were just a perfect fit.
Director Angus MacLane sought a cinematic look for the sci-fi adventure and made all the characters look grounded in the world. He brought depth and clarity to the storyline, making it a brilliant and comical sci-fi film to watch.
