Chennai, 28thAugust, 2019: Fortis Malar Hospital successfully performed three organ transplants within a time frame of thirteen hours. This feat was achieved by the team of doctors led by Dr. K R Balakrishnan, Director, Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Malar Hospital and Dr. Suresh Rao KG, Head of Department, Critical Care & Cardiac Anaesthesia, Fortis Malar Hospital. A 61-year-old man from Rajasthan who was suffering Ischemic Cardiomyopathy and a 13-year-old girl from Chennai who was diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension underwent heart and bilateral lung transplant respectively. The 28-year-old female from Guntur with dilated cardiomyopathy underwent a heart transplant.
All the three recipients underwent the transplant surgery in a time span of 13 hours starting from 8:50PM to 10:00AM the next day with each surgery taking around 4 hours. The long night started with dual lungs from Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta, Road reaching Fortis Malar at 8:50PM. Post receiving the organ, the first organ transplant surgery started immediately and was completed by 1:00AM. The second organ which was a heart from a private hospital in Chennai reached Fortis Malar at 5:50AM for which the surgery was completed by 9:00AM. The third organ which was a heart came from Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta, Road and reached Fortis Malar at 7:30 AM. The third heart transplant surgery was completed by 10:00 AM.
This challenging feat was executed brilliantly by the team of doctors along with the Fortis Malar transplant team who meticulously planned the entire operation. The organ transplants were successfully performed and the recipients are stable and responding well.
