Japan Foundation in association with PVR Cinemas opens Japanese Film Festival India’19 in Chennai

~The 10-day Film Festival opened with the screening of the action-adventure film, “Kingdom” ~

Chennai, 8th November’19: Japan Foundation, New Delhi launched the third edition of Japanese Film Festival’19 (JFF-India) in India in partnership with PVR Cinemas and powered by ENEOS at PVR ICON at VR mall in Chennai today. JFF-India aims to cater to the increasing demand for internationally acclaimed content in the Indian sub-continent. Marking its first year in Chennai, the festival will screen 25 specially curated Japanese films, exclusively for the cine-goers of the region. The 10-day film festival opened with the screening of the action-adventure film, “Kingdom”.

The Opening Ceremony of the Festival witnessed the presence of the honorable dignitaries, Mr. Kojiro Uchiyama, Consul General of Japan in Chennai, Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto, the Director-General of the Japan Foundation, New Delhi and Mr. Swaroop Reddy , Regional Director- South, PVR Cinemas. Tamilian veteran actor-director Chitra Lakshmanan was also in attendance. The event was further graced by Japanese bureaucrats and members of the Japan Foundation.

Mr. Kojiro Uchiyama, Consul General of Japan in Chennai in his inaugural address said that the interesting stories to be screened in the next 10 days in this festival can help you understand the culture, the society and the people of Japan. In case if you feel like going to Japan after seeing these films, there is now a direct flight from Chennai and Tokyo operated by ANA (All Nippon Airways). He further said that many Japanese still remember the film “Muthu” starring Rajinikanth and his recent movie “2.0” hit cinemas in Japan.

Marking the occasion, Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto, Director-General, Japan Foundation New Delhi said“We are excited to bring the festival for the first time to Chennai, the centre of Kollywood. South India is a land of cinema lovers which has made us expand our geographic reach and tap into a larger audience base. The festival is curated with renowned and popular Japanese films to bring Japanese culture, lifestyle and spirit to the people of India.”

He added, “The Delhi-NCR leg of the film festival received an overwhelming response and we are certain the enthusiasm in Chennai will be similar. We want to thank our partner PVR Cinemas for their continued support in making the Film Festival grander with each edition.”

The six-month-long Film Festival touring seven cities was launched in Delhi-NCR in September’19 with the India Premiere of the latest masterpiece of internationally renowned filmmaker, Makoto Shinkai’s “Weathering With You (2019)”. The third edition of JFF-India’s diverse film collection has several popular titles like Dance with Me, Shoplifters, Your Name, Perfect World, Children of the sea, Kingdom, My Dad is a Heel Wrestler! Tokyo Ghoul, The Fable, etc. unveiling fresh insights into contemporary Japanese culture. The films selected will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles for the viewer’s convenience.
